I met Cary at D&M Restorations at the MCACN event in Chicago this weekend. They have a couple of 1963 Z06 cars at the shop. Cary invited me over and one of the cars is an unrestored Black/Red Z06 with 42,000 miles on it and built about 700 cars before mine. I got a few photos below.
This blog is about a 1963 Split Window Corvette, Z06, that I restored at Tony's Corvette Shop in MD from Dec 2017 to Jun 2019. We restored the car to its original condition on the day it was born in June 1963. We know of only 5 Z06 cars with the Black/Red combination. The aim of this blog is to document the progress of restoration and to educate about 1963 Z06's. Questions/if you know of another Black/Red Z06 car, email me at chrismoore@gmail.com or call 415-939-6581.

Sanding out the primer coat
The team at Autobody Dimensions spent a few weeks block sanding the primer, getting the lines as straight as possible. The photos here also show the fit of the doors on the car. Traditionally, C2 Corvettes could have some large gaps and slight body alignment issues straight out of the factory. We will tighten these up in the restoration process.

Time for the primer coat
Finally the last prep coat of paint before we put color on the car. This is all prep for black color, so we're working to get the car totally straight. We'll let this coat dry for a few weeks and then the team at Autobody Dimensions will start block sanding again.

Apply additional gel coat to a couple of areas
After block sanding, there were still a couple of high spots that rubbed down to fiberglass. Those areas were gel coated again. We'll then sand these out and be ready for the primer coat.

Sun bathing the gel coat in the Maryland sun
We put the car out in the Maryland sun to bake the gel coat a bit more. More block sanding is needed and then reshoot any areas with gel coat as needed.

First sanding of the gel coat completed
Tony and I were reviewing the first sanding of the gel coat. Dale from Autobody Dimensions painted the gel coat and the team there block sanded the car.

Body work tuning complete
John Millar completed the work on the body. The car is a no hit car, but we needed to do some tuning of some restoration work performed on the car in 1972. It's looking great.
